Hotline FAQs

Who can call the hotline?

Anyone can call the hotline. We are here to help.

What is the main purpose of the hotline?

The purpose of the emergency hotline is to help people in need. If you need someone to talk to who understands what you are going through, or you want help to plan how to escape a violent situation, our dedicated hotline staff and volunteers are here for you. We will listen, and we can put you in touch with programmes and services in Bermuda that can help. At all times, our main objective is to keep victims of domestic violence and sexual assault safe.

What kind of advice is given via the hotline?

The Women’s Resource Centre hotline is an emergency service and is not intended to offer general information on domestic violence. Hotline volunteers respond according to a caller's needs and may, for example:

  • Refer victims (with or with out children) to emergency safe accommodation
  • Provide information about legal options, as well as referral to relevant services and professionals
  • Carry out crisis and safety planning
  • Offer emotional support

In addition to offering confidential support and information, hotline volunteers are a source of practical help and information about victim’s rights and entitlements, information on getting injunctions or reassurance about calling the police.

Does the hotline offer services in a language other than English?

Currently, our hotline is available in English only. However, if you or someone you know needs counselling, we can certainly try to find a translator to come to the Women’s Resource Centre to assist.

Will the WRC hotline number show up on my phone bill?

Yes, the number will show up on your phone bill. If you are concerned about security, please call us from a pay phone or use a friend’s phone.

Is the call to a hotline free from a cellular phone?

Unfortunately, calls to our hotline are not free from a cellular phone.

What happens if no one answers? Will I get put through to a voicemail?

Your call will not go to a voicemail. If the call is not answered for some reason, it will go to a pager. Unless your number is blocked or unlisted, someone will call you back. If you don’t get a response within a few minutes, please call again.

Who answers the hotline?

Fully trained and experienced female volunteers answer the hotline. All calls are completely confidential.
